Starry Night in the Woods

Inspired by Couple Walking in the Woods

Autumn’s first forgotten leaves flow around us
Raining down on our intertwined hands and
Sunday church clothes
The tall, thin trees stand in perfect line around us like
Knights parading in their king after a victory of war
Sunlight sparkles down on the splendor of the scene
Illuminating the intense life of the woods

As we walk further into Nature’s home,
The woods grow dark, ever so dark,
And the trees grow closer together,
Leaving shadows and the glow of yellow eyes
Nature’s gloom and Nature’s beauty
Separated by a thin layer of sunlight
And a dejected tombstone
Standing alone amongst Autumn’s first decaying leaves
Flowers, long dead, lie before the grave,
Shriveled, old, and decaying
Just like my father must be
In his grave
In the ground
In this place of the dead

Inspired by Starry Night and Light

Momma always said everybody was different
My friends say they cannot feel the colors
The colors hurt
They are so bright, so intense
But they are so beautiful

Momma always said not to cry
My friends do not cry at sunlight
But I do
It cuts like a knife in my head
Finding every neuron to burn with its extraordinary fire

Momma always said to look to the stars
My friends cannot see the countless colors in the stars
They are blind to the warm halos surrounding them
The blues that hide in the inky black night
The yellow fire circling the moon

The stars do not hurt me
Their light is soft as a blanket
And extremely alluring
My friends do not find the stars to be captivating
Momma always said everybody was different

  1. These are beautiful, Meghan. I especially love the first one, the imagery of the leaves "raining down on our intertwined hands and our Sunday church clothes" , and the lines "Nature’s gloom and Nature’s beauty/Separated by a thin layer of sunlight." Really wonderful writing. Thanks, Meghan!
